The 'Sea Chamber' Garden

This character area of a larger garden plan has been designed as an interpretation of T.S. Eliot's celebrated poem, "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock'.

In particular, it was the climatic ending of the poem which I wished to capture in atmosphere - the part which is set amongst the "chambers of the sea".

My overarching aim was to evoke a sense and memory of the sea through the plant choices used.

To that end, I used a colour palette of blues, greys, purples and greens with whites that would represent foam atop waves.

The Crambe cordifolia's great height of around 250 cm when in flower and the spray-like arrangement of its flower heads are intended to evoke a sense of sea spray.

The inclusion of Crambe maritima (Sea Kale) aims to transport the visitor to their own internal memories of being at the beach.

Since the path curves around the planting area, the plants are arranged so that they build in height from both the front approach and sideways view so that the wave effect is achieved.

Incorporated is a planting plan drawn to scale.  We regularly provide planting plans upon request for garden design clients in North London.
